Alderweireld set for Roma switch

Sky Sport Italia is reporting that AS Roma have won the race to sign Ajax stopper Toby Alderweireld.

The highly rated defender has been linked with a number of Europe’s top sides ever since it became clear he would be leaving Amsterdam ArenA in the summer.

And while Liverpool and Tottenham were believed to be leading the chase for the talented defender, reports from Italy suggest Roma have hijacked their bid for Alderweireld.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the Giallorossi have already reached an agreement with both the player and his employers, with the transfer set to be made official in the next few days.

The news will come as a huge blow to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who saw the Belgian as a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher.

The 24-year-old has developed into a world-class centre-back during the five years at Ajax and he appears to be ready for a new challenge.
