Alderweireld’s Spurs clause expires

According to a recent report from Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause has now expired. The belief is that he had the clause in his contract for a while, and it was activated after Tottenham took the option to extend his deal. Alas, it only ran up to now, which could change his transfer status in terms of how likely it is that he’s going to leave.

If he is going to go then it’ll now have to be for a larger fee than £25 million, which could be a good sign for Spurs fans who want to keep hold of the big Belgian. Alderweireld hasn’t been shy when it comes to letting the world know that he wants his future to be resolved pretty soon, but either way it feels like this saga is going to be dragged out.

Will Spurs fans be happy by the end of the window? We’ll have to wait and see.
