AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri warned his side could have scored more goals after they embarrassed Arsenal 4-0 in the Champions League.
The Italian giants all but secured their passage to the quarter-final stage with what Allegri described as an ‘almost perfect’ display on Wednesday but the hard taskmaster was left wanting more.
A brace from Robinho, Kevin-Prince Boateng’s volley and a Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty made it a miserable night for Arsenal at the San Siro and Allegri believed the winning margin should have been even greater.
“Tonight we had so many chances, especially after going 4-0 up. We could’ve won 6-0 and ought to take our chances when they appear, above all in Europe,” Allegri said.
“I hoped to add some more to the result, because we have to take the opportunities. The result is good, but it would’ve been better to score a few more and definitively end the tie. Now we need a goal in London to relax.”
Milan continually found space behind Arsenal’s lacklustre defence, who were not aided by Laurent Koscielny’s knee injury and subsequent substitution, with Robinho and Ibrahomovic in particular afforded too much space.
“The team played almost perfectly, attacking our opponents from the start on all areas of the pitch. In terms of concentration we got it all right and the side showed the right spirit of sacrifice to win,” Allegri said.
“We must always play this way in Europe and Italy so we can win every trophy.”
Milan’s night was made all the more pleasing with news Juventus failed to reclaim top spot from them in Serie A as they were held to a goalless draw with Parma.
Arsenal face a mammoth task to overturn the four-goal deficit in the return leg at the Emirates Stadium on March 6.
