Bayer Leverkusen were simply not up to task as they failed to close in on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, so says Xabi Alonso.
Leverkusen were held to a 0-0 draw by Union Berlin on Saturday.
Despite enjoying 76.4% of possession during the first half, Leverkusen’s dominance yielded just a single shot on target.
Jonathan Tah missed a big chance in stoppage time, but Leverkusen ultimately accumulated only 0.55 expected goals from their 16 attempts.
The draw left them five points back from Bayern, who then extended their lead at the summit to six points by drawing 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund.

With five games left remaining, the odds are stacked against Leverkusen when it comes to retaining their crown.
“For us it was just not good enough. We were missing energy, especially in the last third of the pitch,” said Alonso.
“We did not create chances.”
Leverkusen have just a 2.7% chance of winning the title, according to Opta’s supercomputer, but Alonso has not given up hope.
“It [the title race] is not finished yet and we need to keep going.
“We had a chance today and missed it. The feeling is not euphoric. We have to accept it.”
Saturday’s draw did, however, guarantee Leverkusen’s place in next season’s Champions League.
