Alonso pens new Real deal

The Mail Online understands that Xabi Alonso has signed a two-year contract extension with Real Madrid, ending speculation that he could be about to return to the Premier League.

The midfielder had been linked with both Chelsea and a return to Liverpool – the club he was at for five years previous to his move to the Bernabeu, but will now remain with the La Liga giants until 2016.

The 32 year old revealed the news on Twitter on Wednesday, posting a picture of himself and Real chief Florentino Perez holding the famous white shirt with ‘Alonso 2016’ on the back along with the caption, ‘This will continue to be my home for another two years. A pleasure to let you know. Very, very happy.’

The news will be welcomed by fans of the side, who currently sit in third place in La Liga behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, after they were heard chanting his name in recent home games.

Alonso has played over 200 times for Real, scoring six goals since securing his move from Anfield back in 2009.
