Alvarez to coach Sevilla for rest of season

Spanish Primera Liga side Sevilla on Friday announced that Antonio Alvarez, a member of their technical staff, will replace sacked coach Manolo Jimenez until the end of the season.

The decision came a day after former Spain coach Luis Aragones, 71, turned down an offer to take over at the club.

Sevilla fired Jimenez on Tuesday following a string of poor results.

The club drew 1-1 at home to bottom side Xerez on Tuesday, meaning they have failed to win any of their last seven matches in all competitions, and now sit two points behind fourth-placed Real Mallorca.

Jimenez, who took over from Juande Ramos in October 2007, feared for his job after a Champions League exit to CSKA Moscow last week and some poor league performances but failure to beat basement boys Xerez at home was the final straw.

Alvarez’s first match in charge will be against 10th-placed Villarreal on Sunday.
