Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti believes the standard of football in the Premier League is as impressive as ever.
Critics have derided the quality shown in England’s top-flight this season, pointing to the fallibility of top sides like Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
The criticism was best reflected in Arsenal’s trip to Old Trafford last week, where they fought out an uninspiring 1-0 loss against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
But Ancelotti has hailed the season so far, declaring the evenness amongst the top half of the table has created a thrilling title race.
“Manchester United versus Arsenal was a good game,” Ancelotti said.
“There was a good tempo and there was good tactical behaviour from both teams. I think Manchester United were stronger in midfield than Arsenal, but I thought it was a good game.”
“I think the level of the Premier League is good. The quality is the same as last season.”
“Last year Manchester City were not involved in the top four and Tottenham were not involved at the top either. There is more balance at the top.”
The Chelsea boss also threw his support behind the possibility of rearranging the league season in 2022 so the Qatar World Cup can take place in January, rather than forcing players to play in the stifling heat of July.
“I think you can change something in the preparations of the teams,” Ancelotti said.
“I don’t think it will be easy to manage the team if there is a break in January, not just for the England team but also all the teams in Europe.”
“If you ask me, if I was a player I think it is better to play in January obviously – it’s impossible to play in 50-degree heat (in July).”
“I had the experience of the USA World Cup in 1994 and it is impossible to play at midday at 40 degrees on the pitch.”
