Carlo Ancelotti says Chelsea’s win over Bolton was vital, but rival boss Owen Coyle believes the decisive goal should not have stood.

The Blues broke through for their first win in seven games courtesy of a 1-0 triumph at Stamford Bridge, with midfielder Florent Malouda poking home Didier Drogba’s cross.

There was more than a hint of offside when Drogba received the ball behind Bolton’s defence, but Ancelotti was just happy to get three English Premier League points for the first time since November 10.

“We needed to have this victory to move on,” he told Sky Sports.

“It was important to win to forget the bad moment and now we will have more confidence in the future.”

“The first half was not good. We were a little bit afraid. We wanted to win and in the second half we played much better.”

“We did well on the counter-attack, had a lot of chances and scored, and we controlled the game defensively.”

“It was a very important step, this victory, this performance.”

Opposite number Coyle believed his side was harshly dealt with by the officials, claiming Drogba was definitely offside and Bolton could have had a penalty when John Terry appeared to handle in the box.

“I don’t think there is a bit of offside,” Coyle said.

“You are either offside or you are not, for me it was and it was the turning point of the game.”

“We were very comfortable up until that point and I would suggest that in the first half we looked the most likely to score and we still did enough to recover.”

“We created a few chances and should have had what I believe was a penalty again it wasn’t given in London, but we will have to get on with it.”

“I think that we did enough to win a point. We came here to be positive and with the way the players applied themselves, there is a lot to be positive about.”
