Carlo Ancelotti is refusing to believe he has managed his last game for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge despite persistent rumours that he faces the sack.
Ancelotti saw his Chelsea team throw away victory against Newcastle on Sunday as they conceded an injury-time goal to draw 2-2.
But even with owner Roman Abramovich watching on in disbelief, Ancelotti did his best to remain positive and agreed to join in with a ‘lap of honour’ after the final whistle.
Chelsea fans chanted his name but with reports of a meeting planned after the season to discuss whether or not the Italian will be given a new contract it seems his days are numbered.
“You have to propose this question to the club, not myself. I cannot give an answer,” he said when asked if he would be staying.
“I said I want to wait. I don’t know what will happen. We have to wait just one week. A week is not a long period and see what happens.”
“Everyone can give the opinion about this, about my job here. It is the club that has to take a decision and judge my job.”
“If my job was good, I will stay. If they think it was not good, I will have to go.”
“In my opinion, sometimes I did a good job. Sometimes I could do better.”
Chelsea hardly did much to help their manager against Newcastle, twice throwing away a lead – the second time in the 93rd minute when the game should have been already won.
“We are disappointed because we are very close to winning this game, to closing the fight for second, and now we’re involved in that again and have to fight for another game,” Ancelotti said.
“We needed more concentration at the end. We’ve conceded in the last minute a lot of times this season.”
“We’ve lost a lot of points that way. When you concede a lot of goals in the last minute, something is wrong. You have to be more focused.”
Ancelotti admits it was tough to join the post-match parade but refuses to believe he was waving goodbye to Chelsea fans.
“First of all I want to say thanks to our supporters. Today, also, they gave me fantastic support.”
“For all this season, even when the moment was not so good, they stayed close to the team and to the players. My emotion? I don’t know what happens and I want to wait. After that I can explain.”
Eventually, when asked if he still believed he would be at Stamford Bridge next season, Ancelotti concluded:
“I think so. I think so.”
But he did not sound convincing.
