Anderlecht sporting director Luc Devroe has revealed he was glad the club didn’t sign Liverpool’s Lazar Marković this summer, according to Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad.
A deal that was supposed to put an end to the Serb’s nightmare spell at Anfield was set to go forward towards the end of the transfer window as the clubs had agreed a fee and the player traveled to Belgium. But for some reason, Anderlecht and Marković failed to agree personal terms. The 24-year-old later revealed that money wasn’t at the heart of the problem and thanked Anderlecht for showing so much interest in the first place.
Despite the clubs efforts to get the deal done, Devroe now claims it’s a good thing it didn’t happen, pointing his finger at the former Benfica man’s stats and adding that he had a few good games on loan at the club, but that was it. He admits the fans have a soft spot for the winger, but he believes that’s not a real foundation to make a decision on a signing.
Marković’s contract expires at the end of the season and he looks set to leave as a free agent next summer.
