I remember watching Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes at Barcelona. He never looked confident and always looked under pressure. He just did not seem able to ever express himself on the football field.

He once did a very candid interview about his struggles with the pressure of playing for a club like Barcelona, which may explain his struggles in Catalonia. He left the Catalan club last summer to join Everton on a loan deal and suddenly he looks a different player.

A Rolls Royce of a midfielder

When Gomes played for Valencia, he looked like the coolest player on the pitch for Los Ches when in possession of the ball. The Portuguese star had every attribute to become a top midfielder in the world game.

His performances for Valencia earned rave reviews and a big money move to Barcelona. To be fair the competition for places at the Nou Camp was insane, so he chose to make a temporary move to Everton in the summer. For me, it was a massive coup for the Blues. I decided to forget the midfielder I saw at Barcelona and remembered fondly the Rolls Royce of a midfielder from his Valencia days.

Gomes has certainly not disappointed at Everton. The Portuguese star has been arguably the Toffees best player in most of their recent games. His performance in the Merseyside derby at Anfield was particularly noteworthy. If only he had scored from his headed chance, it would have been a perfect display. I am not sure I have ever seen a better quality midfielder in a blue shirt in my lifetime.

Need to sign him permanently

Everton fans are hoping and praying that the Blues can tie the Portuguese star down on a permanent basis. It would be a major coup to sign the midfielder on a permanent deal. He has no future at Barcelona and looks so at home in the current team.

His permanent signing must be the clubs summer priority, as he is a key player in the way that Marco Silva wants to his team to play. He controls the tempo of games, can tackle and has an eye for a pass.

However, Silva seems to be very pessimistic about Everton’s chances of keeping the midfielder on a permanent basis. Consistently stating that it is out of the clubs hands and it is down to the player or Barcelona. Even Everton teammate Yerry Mina has been attempting to persuade the midfielder to sign on a permanent basis. With every good performance, though, Gomes will be attracting interest from elsewhere.

Maybe a club in the Champions League next season could tempt him away in the summer. However, Gomes seems to be enjoying his time on and off the pitch. Like the Toffees other new additions, he is really buying into the club and the community.

Gomes could be a key to Everton’s success

Everton could move back into the top-six of the Premier League this evening with a victory over Watford at Goodison Park. The Toffees are favourites to beat the Hornets at odds of 8/11.

When Gomes performs, he sets the tone for the rest of his teammates. Silva has made a bright start on Merseyside and the team is moving in the right direction. Andre Gomes is part of the reason why the Toffees have looked so good at times this season.

He arrived at the club injured. However, since he returned from injury he has effortlessly slotted into the central midfield and produced some sublime displays. Signing Gomes could well be a catalyst for the Toffees to return to their glory days, which would be wonderful.

Will Everton sign Andre Gomes on a permanent deal?
