Ajax defender Andre Ooijer has explained that he plans to end his playing career at the end of the season.
The 37-year-old, who made a name for himself at PSV Eindhoven, joined fierce rivals Ajax in August 2010, but has since managed just 16 Eredivisie appearances.
Ooijer has mostly been restricted to substitute appearances this season and he believes the time has come to say goodbye to football.
“In recent months I have already hinted several times that I felt that I could not muster another season,” Ooijer announced on Ajax’s official website.
“My role has also changed in recent years. I had a cup of coffee with the coach last week and told him how I feel about it.”
Ooijer started his career at Volendam in 1994 and went on to play for Roda JC before making a switch to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
After spending almost 10 years at Philips Stadium, the centre-back decided to leave Dutch Eredivisie and signed for Blackburn Rovers in August 2006.
He returned to PSV Eindhoven when his contract with Blackburn expired, but decided to make a shock move to Amsterdam ArenA just a year later.
Ooijer has 55 Netherlands caps to his name and he was part of the Oranje squad that reached the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.
