Anelka given compassionate leave following personal tragedy

West Bromwich Albion have confirmed that they have granted Nicolas Anelka compassionate leave, after it was confirmed that the strikers agent has died, the Independent understands.

Initial reports had suggested that the former Chelsea striker had walked out of training this morning, though this has since been confirmed as false.

The 34 year old is believed to have been questioning his future over the past few days, and it remains unclear whether he may bring forward his retirement.

The former France international moved to the Hawthorns in the summer, having spent six months on loan with Juventus following a brief spell in China with Shanghai Shenhua.

Upon arriving in the West Midlands, Anelka stated that he had hoped to end his career in England.

He made his competitive debut at the weekend, as the Baggies lost their opening game of the season against Southampton thanks to a last minute penalty from Rickie Lambert.
