Antonio Conte must leave Chelsea this summer

I am not sure what happens to Chelsea bosses after winning the Premier League title, as the team seem to fall apart the following season. Current boss Antonio Conte is following in the footsteps of former boss Jose Mourinho, in that his team won the Premier League title before imploding the next campaign.

The Blues 3-1 home defeat by rivals for a top-four place Tottenham all but killed off their chances of playing Champions League football next season. It is still mathematically possible for the team from the capital to finish in the top-four.

However, it is unlikely that any of the current teams occupying the Champions League spots will drop enough points. It is another fine mess the Blues have got themselves in and it looks set to mean the inevitable exit of boss Antonio Conte.

Conte like a different boss this season

The energetic, zippy and joyous Conte we saw patrolling the Stamford Bridge touchline has given way to a man who looks lost, somebody who has taken his dog for a walk and lost it.

I have had a lot of respect for Conte as a football boss since his Juventus days. He comes across as a decent guy and mostly conducts himself with dignity, something that could not always have been said about recent Chelsea bosses.

The team seemed to want to play for the Italian boss last season. This season, that enthusiasm seems to have waned and the team have struggled to recapture last season’s form.

The former Juventus boss’ body language this season is that of a man who is no longer happy in his job and needs to move on. The Blues boss may well be put out of his misery in the near future.

Chelsea accustomed to changing bosses

At most clubs changing bosses is a normality. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not known for his patience with bosses. The Blues do go through a lot of bosses, but it does not seem to affect their ability to challenge at the top end of the table.

Conte came in and won the title in his first season at the club, while predecessor Jose Mourinho won the title in his second season of his second spell. Chelsea are always there or there about when it comes to the business end of the table.

It has almost become a culture to sack bosses at Chelsea and it seems to be working for the club.

Conte likely to leave in the summer

The whole Chelsea situation is pointing to another managerial change this summer. At the minute, it looks like it will be for the best that Antonio Conte leaves Chelsea this summer.

The best for the club and the best for the Italian, who is a far better boss than the Blues currently position shows. He has good tactical acumen and players seem to respect his character. However, Chelsea seems to breed a special kind of player.

The players seem to lose interest in a boss after a season or so. The next boss will no doubt experience the same treatment.

At the moment former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is the favourite to be next Blues boss at 6/4, while the likes of Max Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel are high in the betting.

All of the bosses named are quality bosses, who have to some extent or another experienced success at big European clubs. However, whoever takes the reigns I can see the same scenario of them lasting two years and then leave occurring, as that is just how it now works at Chelsea.

Who should be Chelsea’s next boss?
