According to Sky Sports, Inter are set to appoint former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte as their new head coach. The Nerazzurri head into their last game of the Serie A campaign this weekend fourth place and knowing a win would clinch Champions League football for next season.

First reports linking Conte with the Inter job started two weeks ago. It seems likely now that the former Juventus boss will replace Luciano Spalletti as Inter manager. With Conte is now odds of 2/ 1 to be the next Inter boss. Media reports suggest that Conte will sign three or four-year deal with the Milan club.

The team have not progressed this season

Luciano Spalletti is a highly-respected head coach in the Italian game. His appointment was supposed to be the start bringing back the glory days to the Nerazzurri.

The former Roma boss helped Inter back into the Champions League last season, as the team finished fourth in Serie A. It was it the first time in six years that they made Europe’s elite competition. It was seen as progressed for Spalletti and his team.

This season has been a slightly different story though. Although they look likely to finish in the top four, there is a feeling that the team have not progressed this season. The fact that they have not sealed a Champions League spot with a game to go illustrates that lack of progress.

Conte could prove to be a great appointment

Antonio Conte has been out of work since Chelsea dispensed with his services last summer. His recent managerial record both in Italy is a good one, though. The 49-year-old kicked off Juventus’ dominance in Serie A, before winning the Premier League title in his first season as Chelsea boss.

However, his second season the teams form dipped and as so often when things are going well the Chelsea players just seemed to down their tools. Conte second season was certainly not a reflection on his managerial abilities.

Reportedly the Italian had grown frustrated at the club not signing the players he wanted to sign to strengthen his squad in the summer of 2017. There were also reports of Conte becoming increasingly homesick during his time in London.

The former Juventus hero was never to be out of the game for long. Inter may well prove to be a place to continue his management career. It certainly seems like a good fit. However, so did Spalletti and the Nerazzurri too.

Inter is a difficult job

Managing Internazionale is a difficult job. They are a big club with big expectations. However, the dominance of Juventus in Serie A has made it hard for any Italian team to succeed in the top-flight.

Inter have struggled to find the winning formula in recent years, despite fresh investment in the club. Maybe the club feels that a change of boss will help push the club forward in the near future.

There are very few clubs in world football who would see Antonio Conte as a bad appointment. He is a top coach and should be more settled back in his homeland than he was at Chelsea in his second campaign.

Make no mistake the Inter job will be a massive test of Conte’s managerial skills, both and off the pitch. Bringing success to Inter again would probably be the second biggest achievement of his coaching career.

This appointment would make a lot of sense from everybody’s view. Inter are a top club and they need a top coach, which what Conte is. What could go wrong eh?!

Will Antonio Conte be the next Inter boss?
