Alvaro Arbeloa believes the ‘Clasico’ between fierce rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona on Monday is about more than just the three points.
The former Liverpool fullback, who joined the La Liga giants last season, has seen new manager Jose Mourinho guide the club to the top of the table during his first season in Madrid.
They face the sternest test yet of their title credentials when they go up against the reigning champions at the Camp Nou on Monday.
Championship aspirations aside, Arbeloa acknowledges how important it is for fans of both sides to secure bragging rights over their arch-enemies.
“Obviously beating Barcelona is important for all Madridistas,” Arbeloa said.
“It’s very important, as they are our biggest rival here in Spain. We all know what beating Barcelona at their ground would mean, so we have this as our goal and I hope we achieve it.”
Real go into the match on the back of seven wins in a row, while Barcelona have managed six successive victories.
Both sides have wowed fans with some dynamic football this season, and Arbeloa finds it difficult to separate the sides.
“I think that you are talking about two of the best teams in the world, with particular styles and characteristics,” Arbeloa said.
“The two ways of playing haven’t got much in common, but every team has a chance. I couldn’t say if one was better than the other. They are different.”
“Some people might like the style used by Madrid, others that of Barcelona. Of course, I prefer my team, but it is very even.”
“They (Barcelona) are a great team. One day they talk about (Lionel) Messi, then the next day about Xavi (Hernandez).”
“They are a tremendously competitive team with great players. They are clearly a team to beat, but we’ll see on the pitch. I am confident that we can beat the best version of Barcelona.”
