After watching both Jules Koundé and Raphinha turn down the chance to move to Stamford Bridge in favour of a switch to Barcelona, it is no secret that Chelsea are still on the hunt this summer.
While Kalidou Koulibaly and England international Raheem Sterling have arrived in west London on permanent deals, Thomas Tuchel has been vocal about a need to further add to his squad.
Opening the 2022/23 Premier League campaign this weekend when they make the trip to Everton, Chelsea could be in for a hectic few days both in terms of arrivals and departures.
With Todd Boehly taking charge at Stamford Bridge back in June, the American businessman has made it clear that there is money to be spent this summer.
So, we have taken a look at who could be on their way in and out of Chelsea over the coming days.
In
Wesley Fofana
After missing out on a host of central defensive options this summer, it appears that Tuchel has a new number one target on the top of his wishlist.
After watching both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leave west London on a free transfer, news broke over the weekend that Chelsea are in talks with Leicester over a potential move for Wesley Fofana.
However, while the Blues might be desperate to snap up the French U21 international this summer, Leicester have made it clear that it would take a huge fee for them to be tempted to part ways with their defensive talisman.
With reports suggesting that the Foxes have placed an £85million price tag on the former St. Etienne man, Fofana also signed a two-year extension at the King Power back in March.
However, in a bid to try and find a compromise, The Athletic reported on Sunday that Chelsea are willing to include some of their fringe first-team stars in any kind of deal.
Marc Cucurella
Although all signs last week might have been pointing towards Marc Cucurella making the move to Manchester City this summer, the Brighton star now looks set to be on his way to Stamford Bridge.
With the defending Premier League champions making it clear that they will not meet the Seagulls’ £50million valuation, the 24-year-old shocked many around the Amex by handing in a transfer request over the weekend.
With Brighton making their stance clear, Sky Sports announced on Monday that Cucurella is now inching closer towards a move to west London ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
With Chelsea making it clear that they are willing to match Brighton’s £50million price tag, the Spanish international enjoyed a stellar debut season in England’s top-flight last year.
After arriving from Getafe for a fee of just £15million 12 months ago, Cucurella was named Brighton’s Player of the Season as he helped the Seagulls claim their first-ever top-half finish in the Premier League.
Out
Timo Werner
Although many across Europe were left stunned last month as Romelu Lukaku made a quickfire return to Inter Milan, the Belgian striker isn’t the only forward option who could be on their way out of Stamford Bridge.
While Tuchel might be short of an out-and-out number nine in his squad, it does appear that Timo Werner’s time in the Premier League is drawing to a close.
Largely failing to impress since arriving in west London from RB Leipzig for a fee of £47.5million two years ago, the German international has found himself tumbling down Tuchel’s pecking order.
Nevertheless, while Werner might have managed to muster just four Premier League goals last season, the 26-year-old isn’t short of options this summer.
Although it might have been suggested that both Juventus and Newcastle are keen on striking a deal with the Blues, Sky Sports announced on Monday that Werner looks set to be on his way back to Leipzig on what could be either a loan or permanent move.
Marcos Alonso & César Azpilicueta
While it might be looking increasingly likely that Cucurella will be on his way to Stamford Bridge this summer, two other Spanish full-backs could be heading in the opposite direction.
Although Barcelona might have become a major headache for Chelsea this summer after watching them snatch a string of targets from under their nose, it looks like the Spanish heavyweights aren’t done there.
With Tuchel making it clear that defensive reinforcements are essential before the window slams shut on September 1st, both Marcos Alonso and César Azpilicueta are still at the top of Xavi’s wishlist in Catalonia.
In fact, while Chelsea might be opening their Premier League campaign this weekend away at Everton, The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that Barca are keen on clinching a double swoop prior to the Blues’ season opener.
With both Alonso’s and Azpilicueta’s current deals in west London set to expire next year, The Express are also suggesting that Xavi has already reached out to both players regarding a potential return to their homeland.
