Chelsea are struggling to find their Premier League form and according to reports the Blues are set to strengthen their squad in January.
One of Tottenham’s star players Luka Modric has emerged as their top target, but it seems they could have to wait until the summer to sign the Croat ace.
Friend
It seems that Modric and Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti have a friend in common Dinamo Zagreb vice-president Zdravko Mamic.
Mamic believes that Modric is set to leave White Hart Lane and Chelsea is lining up a bid for the talented playmaker.
Mamic told the Sun newspaper: “I was with Ancelotti for lunch. I was very proud when I heard what he said about Modric,”
“Luka is top of his list, his first pick when it comes to new signings. I’m not Modric’s agent, I am just his friend, but I am very proud. I don’t want to say anything more because I don’t want to upset my friends at Tottenham.”
Mamic helped negotiate Modric’s £16.5million move from Dinamo and it seems he is now trying to help the Croatian secure another move.
Interested
The Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is obviously interested in the 25 year-old midfielder and why wouldn’t he be interested. The Croatian international is one of the most creative players in the Premier League and has impressed immensely since moving to Spurs in 2008.
The Chelsea team seems to lack creativity and need to freshen up their midfield options. Modric is just the sort of player Chelsea need in their team to create chances for their forwards. He has vision and movement that is rare for a Premier League player.
Tottenham
Tottenham will not want to sell one of their top players but a big money offer could persuade them to sell. Modric is no longer guaranteed a place in the team after the arrival of Dutchman Rafael Van Der Vaart from Real Madrid.
Both players like to play in the same role just behind the striker and Harry Redknapp prefers to play with two strikers. This presented a problem for Redknapp when Van Der Vaart first arrived.
Redknapp has had to adapt his tactics and opt for the one upfront with both Modric and Van Der Vaart in the team, usually with Van Der Vaart playing in his favoured position.
Tottenham can’t afford to sell their best players if they are to continue to compete at the top of the Premier League.
I believe it would be short-sighted of Spurs boss Harry Redknapp to sell the Croatian. If he ever wants his side to compete with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea then he can’t sell quality players like Modric.
Happy
Modric has stated he is happy at White Hart Lane and recently signed a new contract with Spurs. The question is would Modric wish to swap Tottenham for Chelsea? Tottenham are on the up and Chelsea is on a slight downward spiral.
I don’t believe it would be in the interests of Modric to move to Chelsea in January or at the end of the season. He is idolised at Tottenham and enjoys playing his football at White Hart Lane. I also believe that Modric will stay at Spurs for the foreseeable future.
Will Luka Modric be signing for Chelsea?
