Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola wanted to leave the club and join Chelsea this summer, says Blues’ goalkeeper coach Christoph Lollichon. The club ended up signing Kepa Arrazibalaga for a world-record goalkeeper fee instead, leaving Areola to compete for the place between the posts at PSG with Gianluigi Buffon.
Lollichon spoke to Le Figaro and revealed he had spoken to Areola often during the summer. He said Areola wanted to come to Stamford Bridge and that it would have been a pleasure to work with him, but it the end it wasn’t up the the goalkeeper coach to make the decision.
Following Thibaut Courtois departure to Real Madrid, Chelsea may have seemed like the perfect place for Areola but it wasn’t to be. Buffon played the opening three matches of the season for PSG, but the 25-year-old then took over for the next two. He also made his international debut on Thursday, helping France to a 0-0 draw against Germany with a superb performance.
