Argentina struggle – is Maradona the problem?

Can it really be possible that Diego Maradona will fail to lead Argentina to the 2010 World Cup?

After their defeat at home to Brazil they have gone on to lose 1-0 to Paraguay and drop to fifth place in the qualifying group.

Get out

With only the top four certain to qualify Argentina find themselves one point behind fourth placed Ecuador with two games left to play. The ‘get out clause’ for Maradona and his men is that the side in fifth face a play-off with the fourth-placed team in the North, Central America and Caribbean group.

In defeating Argentina, Paraguay became the eleventh side to automatically book their place at South Africa next Summer and leave their esteemed opponents looking on with envy.

Worse

In fact, things are even worse for Argentina as they themselves are only one point ahead of Uruguay and Venezuela and two points clear of Colombia. In October they have what should be a relatively straight forward game at home to Peru, but their final game in Uruguay could be a momentous occasion.

It is unbelievable to think that Argentina have won just six of their sixteen games in the tournament so far and have a goal difference of just one. Their poor form won’t be helped by the fact that Juan Sebastian Veron was giving his marching orders in Paraguay and won’t be available for the crucial October games.

Distant

Let us not forget that just two years ago Argentina reached the very top of the FIFA rankings for the first time in their history. They were officially regarded as the best side in the world. Two years on that looks like a very distant memory.

In the eighteen World Cups so far the country has withdrawn three times but in the fifteen occasions they have competed they have failed to qualify just once, in 1970. Not qualifying now is totally unthinkable. For a country who has won it twice, been runners-up once and reached the quarter finals three times, including last time out, qualification is regarded as a certainty.

Failed

In the Copa America they have triumphed on fourteen occasions. They haven’t failed to get to at least the quarter-finals in their last nine attempts and have been runners-up in the last two tournaments. With this record against other South American teams how on earth can they be sitting in fifth place?

They are currently ranked eighth by FIFA in the World standings whereas the teams sitting above them in the qualifying group include Paraguay (twenty-third), Chile (twenty-first) and Ecuador (thirty-sixth). Venezuela, just one point behind them do not even make FIFA’s top fifty.

Wrong

Something is going terribly wrong for the side who should surely still be one of the best in the world and one of the favourites for South Africa 2010. They still have great players and they have a manager who despite his well publicised problems is a national icon.

It is likely that Argentina will still find just about enough to qualify and that will leave them with a few months to sort the problems out before the tournament proper actually starts.

Problems

However, it would appear that those problems are pretty serious and it could be that the removal of Maradona and the appointment of an experienced manager is what is needed.

What do we think, should Maradona go or does the problem lie elsewhere?

of course you dont get those kinds of skills through drugs…. my b.
I apologize to the DM fans for my …. narrowmindedness.
And yet… I was incrdibly angered by the fact that DM used drugs, especially to get fit for the 94 WC. You must get fit solely on hard work and effort… you cant “cheat” in a way, by taking a goldurn cocktail.

maradona was a great player on the field. However, i was quite surprised to see him get the coaching job.

I’ve always been a fan of Maradona’s game. You don’t get that kind of skills just by doing drugs so i think it’s really narrow minded to discredit him because of his drug problem. I’ve played the game at the national level and that type of skills doesn’t come easy.

Lots of ours were spent perfecting the technique.

NEvertheless, i agree Maradona should be removed. It would be a tragedy if Argentina doesn’t qualify.

unfortunately tha Argentine gr8 is the problem here, jus coz u played soccer doesnt alwayz mean ure destined 4 gr8ness as a coach as well.it pains me to see him tryng horribly to sink the gr8 mothership of football argentina whilst claiming to be fighting 4 a world cup slot.i believe he deserves 2 be fired, the man myt be having financial probz but that dont make us a charity case coz its costing us a chance at glory, with a real coach, not an excuse of a coach by the name of maradonna,we will take that gold.HE MUST GO

    Affirmative.
The drug addict is the problem.
He was definitly good-if overrated- during his playing years, but his skill was in part helped on by drugs. As a manager, he’s pathitic as HELL.
Sorry but there aint no way round it. Anyone who disagrees, you are just as misty eyed over his managing skills as you were over his rigged playing skills.

We are big, big, fans of Argentina National Soccer Team, but we are very disappointed by the last few poor performances by Argentina Team. We simply can not imagine FIFA World Cup without light blue & white shirts. We think that major changes should be done in the pitch & Maradona has to be removed. We would love to see Riquelme, Cambiasso & Higuain in the pitch. Anyway we are optimistic & still believe that things will go well. We love Argentina Team, we support them & we wish them success.

As an Argentine, I will admit that when I heard Maradona was going to be taking over the team, I was excited. Who wouldn’t be? Little did I know that it’d ruin the team as a whole as more put our World Cup dreams in danger.

The problem is two parts in nature. 1) Maradona. His skill on the field hasn’t translated and I doubt will ever translate to the tactical skill need to run a team.

Secondly, we do lack a mental precense in the middle. So the coaches directives don’t work, there is no player on the team that can take the reigns and turn things around on the field, in the moment. Which is where I think Riquelme should come back into the fold. Say what you will about his playing style, he knows how to make things happen and how to take control of a situation that looks to go only further down hill.

That being said, I don’t think now would be the time to axe Maradona completely. 2 games left to be played and less than 1 month to prepare, it may cause more harm than good, but I suppose at this point, what is there to lose? If they make it through, which my heart thinks will happen, but my mind doubts all too much, a change in coach is probably their best bet once we are a secure presence in South Africa, and then maybe we’ll see the team we all know they can be.

Argentina’s problem is not maradona. The team a middle man. The midfield is too weak. I have great respect for veron, but he is the player he once was. The only chance of argentina going anywhere is by finding a player with the forte to maintain the middle field.

Argentina are in need of an experienced coach. Maradona is a joke as a coach, but was brilliant on the field. Please find them a new coach before we don’t get to see the best player in the world play in the World Cup next year! Messi is God!

Of course Maradona is the problem. That arrogant fool thinks his mere presence will magically transform his team to world beaters. How did the AFA ever agree to this a year before the WC? He was overrated as a player, and clearly overrated as a coach.
