According to a report from Marca, Premier League side Arsenal have some competition in the race to sign Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins – and that competition is Ligue 1 club Monaco, managed by their former star striker Thierry Henry. The 23 year old Martins has been on the Gunners’ radar for quite some time now, but has barely even been able to make a splash with Atletico Madrid since joining last year. He made the jump over from Sporting Lisbon, and now, it already seems as if he’s turning his attention towards pastures new.
At the time Sporting actually made a complaint to FIFA regarding the transfer, stating that they wanted €100 million in compensation which was the release clause in his formerly cancelled contract.
Both Arsenal and Monaco will be hoping things aren’t quite as controversial this time around, as we gear up for a busy final week of the transfer window.
