Italian daily newspaper Il Tempo understands that Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea are locked in the battle for Lazio centre-back Stefan de Vrij.
The Netherlands international has largely impressed since joining the club from Feyenoord, and he is being heavily linked with a big club move.
With De Vrij’s current contract due to expire at the end of next season, it is hardly surprising that his suitors have recently been in contact with his representatives.
Il Tempo has suggested that Arsenal and Chelsea lead the chase at the moment, although it has to be noted that Lazio have offered the defender a major pay rise in an attempt to persuade him to stay.
The Biancocelesti are even prepared to insert a €35 million release clause in the new deal, knowing all too well that De Vrij might not be ready to extend his contract unless he is promised he will be sold in the future.
