Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid on a permanent deal, according to multiple sources.
The talks between the two clubs are now in the final stages, and Arsenal have made it clear they need the Norwegian registered by midday on Friday, so as to have him available for the vital clash against Chelsea on Sunday in the Premier League. There is, however, still work to be done before a total agreement is reached.
The Gunners’ priority has always been to sign an attacking midfielder this summer, and Odegaard has been their primary target on that front. James Maddison of Leicester City has been mentioned as an alternative, but it seems there will be no need to look beyond Odegaard.
The deal is set to cost Arsenal an initial fee of £30 million, which could rise to £34m through various add-ons.
The 22-year-old has featured for Real during the pre-season, but he wasn’t included in their matchday squad for the opening La Liga fixture, a 4-1 win away to Alaves on Saturday.
