Arsenal are considering handing Danny Welbeck a new contract.
The 28-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and he is behind both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the pecking order under Unai Emery. He hasn’t played since last November after breaking his ankle and requiring two separate surgery procedures, and he won’t return to action before his contract is out. In December last year, Sky Sports reported that the club would not be willing to offer him an extension.
However, Emery has now revealed that the club will consider it. Welbeck is on schedule in terms of his recovery and likely to start team training in the last weeks of the season, following which he will discuss his future with the Arsenal hierarchy.
Competing on several fronts requires significant squad depth, and though Welbeck may not be Emery’s first pick as a starter, he may have a part to play in the boss’s plans.
