Manchester City beat Arsenal by 3-0 at the Etihad as the Premier League returned on Wednesday.
It was a good performance by the defending champions, though they don’t seem much closer to actually defending their title – they’re now ‘only’ 22 points behind league leaders Liverpool. It probably wouldn’t have been that bad from Arsenal either, had it not been for injuries to midfielder Granit Xhaka and centre-back Pablo Mari, and a walking calamity by the name of David Luiz.
The Brazilian first made a howler which enabled Raheem Sterling to open the scoring late in the first half, and only four minutes into the second, he pulled down Riyad Mahrez from behind inside the box, giving away a penalty which Kevin De Bruyne converted, and getting himself sent off by referee Anthony Taylor in the process. It was truly an awful performance, particularly coming from such an experienced player.
To his credit, speaking after the game, he took full responsibility for the result of the match.
