Arsenal eyeing Mario Yepes

Daily Express is reporting that Arsenal are weighing up a surprise move for Colombian defender Mario Yepes.

The Gunners are extremely short of options in the heart of defence after Arsene Wenger failed to sign another centre-back in the summer transfer window, while Laurent Koscielny’s Achilles injury only makes matters worse.

As a result, Arsene Wenger is forced to consider the free agent market and he is reportedly ready to offer Mario Yepes a one-year contract.

The 38-year-old has seen his deal at Atalanta expire in June, and he is currently not thinking about retirement.

While many would suggest the Colombia star is too old to be playing in English Premier League, the player’s impressive performances for los Cafeteros at the 2014 World Cup are enough to suggest otherwise.

Yepes captained the national team as they reached the quarter-finals, starting four of five matches at the tournament finals and having a goal disallowed in the defeat to Brazil.
