Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva has completed a move to Greek side Panathinaikos after a six year spell under Arsene Wenger. Panathinaikos beat other teams to the signature of the £5 million rated midfielder who had been out of favour at The Emirates Stadium.
“We have agreed to the transfer and signed the papers. It is now an official agreement.
“We had other offers but we respected Gilberto’s desire to sign for Panathinaikos.” Said Arsenal’s acting managing director, Ken Friar, according to The Sun.
The Independent reports that Arsenal would put the £5 million they would earn from Gilberto’s transfer to make a bid for Liverpool target Gareth Barry. Liverpool have failed to reach an agreement with Aston Villa for Barry and now the relationship between the two clubs has soured.
The same report states that Martin O’Neill would be much more inclined to accept a bid for Gareth Barry from another club rather than Liverpool.
Meanwhile, BBC reports that Barry has been ordered to report back to training on Wednesday after having been previously banned from Aston Villa’s pre-season preparations.
