Arsenal are ready to make an offer for Republic of Ireland and Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given according to the News of the World.
Arsenal are ready to offer around £3.5 million for the Toon favourite, who has established himself as one of the Premierships’ top keepers after years of impressive displays at St. James’ Park.
Given, 32, joined Newcastle for £1.5 million back in 1997 after following then manager Kenny Dalglish from Blackburn to Newcastle. Since joining Given has usually been Newcastle’s first-choice keeper, although fellow Toon stalwart Steve Harper has battled for the number one shirt on more than one occasion.
Arsene Wenger is unlikely to be deterred by Given’s age, pointing out the fact that Lehman was 33 when he signed for Arsenal and that many keepers reach their prime later in life.
Given will be seen as an ideal replacement for Lehamn at the Emirates and Wenger may see Given as player to please the fans demand for UK and irish players at Arsenal.
