Arsenal set for £5 million Valencia bargain

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is trying to set up a £5 million bargain deal for Valencia defender Raul Albiol, according to the Daily Mirror.

Albiol, 22, who can play in central defence or as a holding midfield player, is currently with Spain at Euro 2008, and came on as a second half substitute in their Group D win over Sweden.

Valencia, who only narrowly avoided the drop last season, have built up large debts at the club which could spark a wild transfer spree which may see a mass exodus of top names leave the Mestalla. Albiol is expected to join David Villa, Joaquin, David Silva and Miguel in an exodus at Valencia.

Albiol, 22, has proved himself to be a quality defender at Valencia where he has established himself to gain a regular position in the Los Ches team. Albiol would fit in with Wenger’s usual style of signings, and his versatility is something that Wenger reportedly admires.

Once again another proposed bargain basement buy, ah gawd when are we going to spend real money on really top class players?. To be fair we ain’t done too bad so far with the basement buys but we ain’t won nowt just the same. It’s so annoying when us Gooners read in the papers a few months ago that we were one of the richest clubs in the world. This can’t go on forever if we ain’t got the lolly (or have we? and the boss is not spending it?) we have to either invite Stan The Man on board or we get left behind, because not only will Man Utd and Chelski get stronger and stronger, lets not forget that the teams below us will be getting stronger too. Can you imagine us waking up next year and finding that it wasn’t a nightmare it was reality we didn’t get into europe and lost all our top players, and to top it all the spuds took our place in Europe. If we don’t strengthen that defence right now especially at centre half before the season starts, we may live to regret it at the end of the season. Couldn’t happen? Oh yes it could!!!!!
