Arsene Wenger is so good for the Premier League

There is no doubt that Arsene Wenger has mellowed over the years and I am one of those who has changed dramatically from disliking the man with some fervour to admiring and respecting him greatly.

His record as a manager and in particular, of bringing on young players, speaks for itself. The way his teams play the game also speaks volumes for a man who likes to see the game played in the right way. His players keep possession, keep the ball on the deck and pass and move in intricate patterns that a joy to watch.

Refusal

The downsides to Wenger are his stubbornness in doing things his way and his refusal to bring in big names for vast amounts of money and his infamous tunnel vision that means he is always able to see bad decisions and fouls against his players but never able to see any of the misdemeanours committed by players in an Arsenal shirt.

Now, at long last Mr Wenger has admitted what everyone knew already. He did see things sometimes!

“At times I saw it, and I said I didn’t to protect the player. It’s because I could not find any rational explanation to defend him. This is a job where you have to have an optimistic view of human nature or you become paranoid. You always have to think that a guy wants to do well. A coach is there to help. He must think that if he helps in the correct way the players will respond. You cannot be suspicious.”

Whilst it is refreshing to hear Wenger speak the truth and also a basically good thing that he does what he needs to do to protect his players, I do take issue with what he says to a certain degree.

Criticising

I agree with him that, “this is a job where you have to have an optimistic view of human nature or you become paranoid. You always have to think that a guy wants to do well.” Where I don’t agree is that the manager can only think that about his own players. Mr Wenger has never been slow in criticising in the strongest possible terms, players from other teams. I do not remember him having an optimistic view of Martin Taylor, or the entire Stoke side!

One thing that Wenger talked about recently was particularly refreshing. The rumour that he was going to leave Arsenal to take over at Real Madrid was very strong indeed at one stage. It now seems that the move was a distinct possibility and that Wenger had to consider his options. What he decided again speaks volumes for the other side of the man. His integrity.

“I knew what Real Madrid wanted to do but I didn’t want to leave Arsenal. I want to go to the end of my job here. I built this team, I want to deliver with this team and I feel that if I left I would in some way have betrayed my beliefs. It is nothing to do with what Real Madrid have done. I just couldn’t see leaving this team at this stage of their development.”

In an age where stardom, celebrity and money seem to be all that people in football want, how nice it is to hear someone speaking like that. Loyalty, integrity and a determination to see a job through are fairly rare virtues it would seem in the modern game. Wenger has them in abundance and Arsenal fans should be grateful that he has.

Revolutionising

The fifty-nine year old Frenchman has been at Arsenal for thirteen years now and he has played a large part in revolutionising the way players in England treat the game. The training methods and lifestyles of the modern English footballer are very different to those found by him when he arrived at Arsenal and he is owed a huge debt of thanks for that.

He is part of the Premier League fabric and I hope he continues to be so for many years. Like him or loathe him, you have to admire what he has achieved. The Premier League would miss him greatly.

Having said that, I bet most Gooners would still like him to get his chequebook out!

does it really make much difference when it was written?

the ‘Refusal’ section – doesnt every manager try to do that? same with critisizing players, doesnt every manager try to protect his players to some extent? perhaps wenger simply does it more than others?

actually, one reason i appreciate Arsenal more than other premier teams (that and their superior playing style) is because they DONT just pull out the checkbook when the heat is on…ahem, m.city.
that being said you can see what a struggle it must be for Wenger to guide players for so long and then have them leave for big dollars to other contenders.

‘big 4’ talk is silly too if u ask me… the more legitimate contenders there are the better the league will be. a healthy arsenal squad can and will beat any team in the world.

Graham Fisher, thank you for your column.

Many football pundits are very good at critising Arsene Wenger and his team when he failed and applaud him when he did well (you inclusion. And you may say, you wrote this column before the match on Saturday, that would have been a plain lie because I received this messege in my ESPN e-mail services inbox today being Monday, 17th August, 2009) to the extend that many of you had already written Arsenal off the “Top Four” since last season especially this season with “Big Money Spenders (Man City)” fighting for a place in the “Top Four”. For that reason, many football pundits, reporters, journalists etc has given the place of Arsenal in the “Top Four” to Man City, in fact before the Everton clash on Saturday, in the paper and other media reports, Everton were the winner, but unfortunately, on the pitch of play Arsenal were victorious. Glory be to God for having silenced our critics.

In his pre-match Press Conference Arsene Wenger assured Arsenal Fans that “I am not going to settle for ‘Top Four’ spot but the first place”.

So the truth remain plain, whether you like him or not, that will not stop him from executing his plans niether will that persuade him to change his policy.

Take me by my words, Arsenal will NOT give its place to any one, not even Man City because Man City is not just a threat to Arsenal alone as many of you have thought, but to every club in the Premier League.

    ARSENAL WILL SURELY SUCCEED!!!

    Graham Cheers.

Wenger is good for the game, faithful to his players but they often forget and ditch him when they become stars. I use to think he gambles a lot with the team, but I now know that he is simply a good manager.

I think most real football fans have a real respect for Arsene, I’m a United fan but the day he retires from the game is going to be a very dark day for football.

This article was no doubt, inspired by the everton vs arsenal game played yesterday, in which arsenal demolished everton 1-6. I have no problem in what was said about Arsene Wenger in the article, everyone has their own opinion and i respect that. And it is also a good reflection of the man, in terms of his contributions to the english game and his ability to develop young players and transform them into international superstars…i have no problem what was said, but if this article was written last week, two years ago, or even last year december, then i would have taken it seriously.
To often it happens that wen arsenal are doing bad, nobody has anything good to say about the manager. When they dont buy players, all you hear is negativity, when they dont win against a small team, or one of the “Big Four” for that matter, all you hear is negativity. When he has faith in one of his younger and unknown players, even though the player doesn’t perform right away, then wenger is the most stubborn old men on the face of the earth.
i like wenger, even though im a liverpool guy.he brings something different to he table that no other manager can replicate. And like every manager, he deserves all praise he gets as well as the criticism.
Im just sick of hearing about how GREAT wenger is and how we need him in the english game, whenever his team wins, and people cant wait to see him leave, whenever the team doesnt perform.
Im looking forward to them losing very soon, just to see what people will come up with this time
