Russian midfielder Andrei Arshavin understands the disappointment of English fans but insists Russia will host a ‘perfect’ World Cup.

The Arsenal star was an ambassador for the Russian bid which won the right to host the 2018 World Cup ahead of bids from England, Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands.

Arshavin said while he understands England fans are frustrated by the failure of their bid, hosting the tournament would do a world of good for his homeland.

“For me it is difficult to say about the England bid because obviously I supported my country and I’m very happy for Russia,” Arshavin said.

“You (England)love football, I see it every day. Football in England is religion and as I said somewhere after I came back Jack Wilshere asked me ‘What have you done?'”

“I dreamed of lifting the trophy with my supporters. I can understand him but I said: ‘You are only 18 you have time’.”

Arshavin was booed by Fulham fans during the Gunners’ 2-1 win over their London rivals last week, but said the treatment did not bother him.

“I fully understand them, but it did not disturb me to beat their team, no problem,” the 29-year-old added.

Russia is also hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics and Arshavin said prime minister Vladimir Putin would ensure both events ran smoothly.

“I think it will give us a lot of things to do and help our country improve, not just in terms of football, but also generally,” Arshavin said.

“It will be perfect, believe me – if Vladimir Putin wants something, he does really well.”
