UEFA Cup champion and star midfielder, Andrei Arshavin, stated that their opponenets Rangers had been the weakest team Zenit St Petersburg had to face in the entire competition on their route to the UEFA Cup final.
Arshavin said: “I think Rangers were the weakest of all our opponents in our UEFA Cup campaign, but the Scots managed to cause us problems with their dedication and good defensive play and also by not allowing us to undo them.”
Arshavin, who was the creator of both goals in 2-0 final victory on Wenesday, also stated that Rangers had been very difficult to to break down, and that it turned down to be a very diffult match.
As newly crowned champions of Russia, Zenit will compete in the Champions League for the first time. With with their UEFA Cup triumph, they have gained a lot of valuable international experience to help them prepare them for the most prestigous tournament on a club level.
