Arsenal managed to book three points on Wednesday evening by taking advantage of an obvious lack of concentration from Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, but head coach Mikel Arteta is adamant his team remain ‘miles behind’ the newly crowned Premier League champions.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Arteta pointed out that Liverpool improved their squad and reached the current heights by making well-timed signings, and expressed a ‘big concern’ over whether his club would be able to follow the example this summer due to uncertainty over transfer funds potentially available.
He said Arsenal need a bigger squad than the one they have at the moment to be able to compete properly in the Premier League. He is proud of the way his players have developed recently in terms of responsibility, energy and the ‘fight’, and he believes that it is one area where they can now compete with the best, but he is also aware that taking the next step, the one where the Gunners would be able to challenge the teams at the top on a long run, will be a ‘massive job’.
