Liverpool striker Fernando Torres handing in a transfer request came as a slight surprise but the way he has played in the last 12 months it shouldn’t have.
Liverpool rejected the Spaniard’s request for a move and told him he must fulfil his contract.
Offer
Liverpool have already turned down a bid of £35million from Chelsea for the 26 year-old but the champions are expected to come in with a higher bid before the transfer window shuts on Monday.
Depending on what reports that bid could be between £40million and £50million.
That is a hefty amount of money for any club to receive and it looks as though Liverpool may be resigned to losing their star striker, although they are apparently upset that the striker decided to make his feelings public.
Unsettled
For awhile now Fernando Torres has looked disinterested and unsettled. He said in August he was happy at the club and didn’t want to leave the Reds. However his body language and performances have told everybody otherwise.
You don’t have to be a psychologist to know that all is not right in camp Torres. Chelsea have been chasing the striker for awhile and he feels it’s now time to move on from Liverpool. He signed for Liverpool to win the big trophies but at the moment the club aren’t in a position to challenge for those big trophies.
Fans
To Liverpool fans he was a hero and after handing in the transfer request he came in for heavy criticism. A lot Liverpool fans are now saying that the club should let the Spaniard go but only for the right price. Some fans are even saying they are glad to see the back of the striker.
Chelsea
Chelsea are able to offer Torres the chance to win the big trophies like the Champions League. The Blues are slightly off the pace in the race for the Premier League title but if they sign Torres he could be the catalyst for a comeback.
On his day he is one of the most dangerous strikers in the world. Unfortunately he has struggled for form in the last few months. His form has however picked up in recent weeks and he has started to look like his old self again.
Not only would signing Torres help the club’s bid for Premier League glory it would be a signal of intent to their rivals that they really do mean business in the transfer market. And they are still prepared to spend big to gain success.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is set to take a more active role in the club and he’s set to invest £100million of his own money in the champions if reports are to be believed.
Timing
One of the major obstacles in the way of the deal is the fact that the transfer window shuts tomorrow. The deal will have to be negotiated very quickly and it doesn’t give Liverpool time to sign any new additions.
They have already brought in Luis Suarez from Ajax for a hefty fee but he was expected to be signed as a partner rather than a replacement for the Spaniard. It now looks like he will have to be a replacement.
Summer
If Torres does join Chelsea then whoever the Liverpool manager is in the summer they will have a good transfer kitty to start rebuilding a squad which is in need of strengthening.
I’m sure many Liverpool fans wouldn’t have chosen to sacrifice Fernando Torres for that strengthening but at the moment the move would probably be the best for all three parties involved.
Should Liverpool sell Fernando Torres?
