Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has decided to take a temporary break from international football, the Ghana Football Association have revealed.

The 26-year-old striker, who is currently on loan at Al Ain, was heavily criticized after Ghana’s semi-final exit from Africa Cup of Nations, just like most of his international teammates.

The Black Stars missed out on a place in the 2012 AFCON final as they were beaten by Zambia, whereas they also stayed without a medal after losing the 3rd place playoff to Mali.

The Ghana Football Association have now revealed they have received a letter from the player announcing his decision not to play for the national team in the near future.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received a letter from striker Asamoah Gyan announcing his decision to take a temporary break from the Black Stars,” read a statement on the Ghana FA’s official website

”Mr. Gyan is frustrated over the verbal abuse he has received since playing for the country at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.”

Asamoah Gyan has represented his country 59 times, scoring 28 goals in the process, and he is currently the third best goalscorer in the national team history behind Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah.

I think Asamoah has done his best, Ghana should learn how to appreciate anything the national team player will do as Agyemang Badu said, we should support them everywhere the go and appreciate it because ppenalty is not an easy thing.

He is the reason why Ghana are not top of Africa & maybe even the World. He failed a crucial penalty at the World Cup & at the African Cup like you said. He is the main reason why Ghana has failed on international stage. Yes there are 10 more men on the pitch but Gyan is certainly the biggest failure in the Ghana national team. & he left Sunderland for Al-Ain earlier this season after Sunderland paid big bucks for him from a french club. I think Ghana can now look forward without him in the squad. Ghana is a strong enough football nation to make up for Gyan’s absence.
