Aston Villa welcome the visit of bitter rivals Birmingham City in the Capital One Cup third round on Tuesday night, and are desperate to turn their poor form around with a Midlands derby win. Tim Sherwood’s men couldn’t be in worse shape for such an important clash this week, but they will take some confidence from Birmingham’s recent dip in form in the Championship.

With the Villans having now gone five games without a win in the Premier League, conceding eight goals in their last four, they won’t be underestimating their second tier opposition. Sherwood knows the supporters are expecting a result against the Blues, and will be naming a strong squad of players to get the job done.

Birmingham’s form has also spiralled in recent weeks, with City having picked up only one point from a possible six, as well as dropping points in two of their last three away games, and Aston Villa are 19/20 with Betfair to see past their Midlands rivals. The last time the two sides met in the cup, Birmingham came out on top. This week’s game could see a reverse in fortunes.
