Competition: EFL Cup
Market: Aston Villa win and over 1.5 goals
Odds: 5/6 @ 888sport
Making a return to competitive action on Tuesday night, Aston Villa will make the trip to League One Burton Albion on EFL Cup duties.
Starting with the hosts, although Burton might have even shocked themselves by marking their return to action with a 1-0 pre-season friendly win against Championship outfit Stoke last month, it appears that was an ever so minor bounce for the Brewers. Showing plenty of issues before the League One campaign was brought to an early halt back in March by winning just one of their final 10 third-tier appearances, Jake Buxton’s side have struggled to find their feet under their new boss this summer. Along with a penalties defeat against Peterborough in the EFL Trophy earlier in the month, Burton also opened the New Year with a 2-1 defeat away at Fleetwood over the weekend. Failing to win any of their final five League One contests on home soil last season, the Staffordshire side could be in for another tough test in midweek.
As for the visitors, managing to mount a stunning great escape and extending on their Premier League status at the final hour earlier in the summer, the mood in Aston Villa’s camp is at a high as they make a return to competitive action in midweek. Already splashing the cash and bringing in a string of new recruits over the past week, Dean Smith would have also been impressed by his side’s final pre-season contest over the weekend. Landing a 1-0 win against a Manchester United side that hosted the likes of Harry Maguire, Villa should be looking to lay down an early marker when they return to action in Staffordshire. Unbeaten in their final four Premier League contests last season and also securing a 4-0 romp the last time they traveled to the Pirelli Stadium, we’re backing a similar outcome on Tuesday night.
