According to AS, Aston Villa are closing in on a free transfer of Mario Hermoso, whose contract with Atletico Madrid expires at the end of the season.
Apparently, newly crowned Serie A champions Inter Milan are interested in the 28-year-old defender as well, but Villa are ahead in that race with Hermoso keen to try his luck in the Premier League. The strong Spanish presence at the club, in the form of manager Unai Emery, and fellow defenders Pau Torres and Alex Moreno, is thought to be another contributing factor.
Furthermore, Villa are believed to be able to offer better financial terms to Hermoso, and they’ve come within touching distance of securing Champions League qualification. At the moment, they are fourth in the Premier League table, with a seven-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur in fifth place. Spurs have a game in hand, but they play that game against Manchester City, who need all the points they can get to keep hold of the title in the English top flight.
