Aston Villa to sign a 37-year-old

Aston Villa are close to completing a signing of former Arsenal star Robert Pires on a free transfer.

The former World Cup winner has been training with the Gunners for several weeks now in order to stay fit after ending his contract at Villarreal last summer and he is now on the verge of signing for Aston Villa.

Having been hit by the serious injury crisis, the Villans are desperately short on numbers in midfield and they are ready to take a gamble with the 37-year-old Frenchman.

Villa boss Gerard Houllier knows Pires very well and he believes the player’s experience can be of big help in the second part of the season.

The Frenchman is likely to sign a one-year deal at Villa Park.
