Atheltic Bilbao president Fernando Garcia Macua reveals the club are not interested in selling Fernando Llorente despite heavy interest from Real Madrid.
It was reported the Real Madrid were ready to meet the player’s release clause which stands at €36 million, but Garcia Macua says los Leones would rather keep the player at San Mames.
“I don’t want the money, I don’t want to have €36 million in the bank, I want to compete. I want Llorente to spend next ten years at Athletic,” Macua said.
Macua also hinted that he wanted to make Athletic stronger, not weaker by declaring interest in Real’s Basque, Xabi Alonso.
“I also want Xabi Alonso in the club during the next ten years.”
Athletic, nonetheless, will not have an easy job in trying to keep the Spain international at the club with his contract expiring in two years’ time, so they will have to persuade him into signing a new deal or risk losing him to one of the big European clubs.
