Atletico de Madrid fired coach Abel Resino on Friday after a disastrous start to the Spanish league season.
“Abel Resino is no longer the first team coach of Atletico de Madrid as of Friday,” the club said on its website.
It did not indicate if a replacement has been named.
The sports newspaper Marca had said on Thursday that Resino would be replaced by Denmark’s Michael Laudrup.
Resino, 49, has been at Atletico since February when he replaced Mexican Javier Aguirre.
Atletico, who finished fourth in the Primera Liga last season, is currently in 15th place, with the worst defensive record in the league.
They were thrashed 4-0 by Chelsea on Wednesday in the Champions League and with just one point from three games are in danger of going out of the tournament.
