Spanish daily newspaper AS understands that Atletico Madrid have made an official proposal for Celta Vigo captain Augusto Fernandez.
It is no secret that los Colchoneros plan to sign a replacement for Tiago Mendes, who looks set to miss the remainder of the campaign through a broken leg.
Atletico were recently linked with a move for Zenit hotshot Axel Witsel, but the latest reports suggest that they have made Celta’s Augusto Fernandez their primary target.
AS claims that los Colchoneros already submitted an offer for the Argentine midfielder and told Celta they expected an answer by 24 December.
The 29-year-old has been one of the most important cogs in Eduardo Berizzo’s machinery that climbed to fourth in the La Liga standings, together with Nolito and Iago Aspas.
The Sky Blues look ready to mount a serious challenge for Champions League positions and can now be backed at 13/8 to achieve a top 4 finish.
