According to Marca, Atletico Madrid have finalised the contract extension of defender Diego Godin. The 32-year-old, who impressed with Uruguay during the 2018 FIFA World Cup earlier this year, had been linked with a late move to Manchester United which never quite came to fruition. Now, he’s set to remain in Spain until at least 2021 as Atletico ensure that they keep hold of their star defender.
His buyout clause was initially believed to be around €20 million, but courtesy of this new deal, it seems likely that the club would’ve increased that. Godin seems to be getting better and better as the years go on, with many United fans being incredibly disappointed that they weren’t able to bring him to Old Trafford.
Atletico are currently preparing to face local rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday before they open up their La Liga campaign against Valencia on Monday night.
