Atletico Madrid to sign Brazil international

Atletico Madrid seem to have won the race with Benfica for Corinthians midfielder Elias Mendes Trindade, who looks set to join los Colchoneros in January.

Atletico have agreed to pay Corinthians €7 million for the Brazil international, with the player set to meet up with his new teammates in the next few days.

Benfica missed their chance to sign Elias when the club president Luis Filipe Viera traveled to Brazil last week, especially as the two clubs agreed on the price but the deal fell though after they couldn’t reach an agreement on the payment method.

Atletico Madrid then decided to act after they received favourable reports from sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch, who had twice tried to sign him in the past.

The 25-year-old Elias didn’t hide his desire to play in La Liga, helping Atletico win the race for his signature.

The player has been an ever present in the Corinthians squad this season, while he has also started Brazil’s last two friendly games.
