Atletico Madrid have announced on their official website that they are set to sign forward Cristian Rodriguez from FC Porto.
The Uruguayan international will sign a four-year contract with los Colchoneros subject to passing a medical at Vicente Calderon.
The 26-year-old, nicknamed ‘the onion’ because of his reputation for making defenders cry, arrives to Madrid on a free transfer after his contract with the Portuguese giants expired.
Atletico Madrid sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero didn’t hide his excitement when speaking about club’s latest capture.
“He is a very quick player, attacking and with a lot of character, a winner,” Jose Luis Perez Caminero told club’s official website.
“He will give us a lot of options in attack because he is multi-purpose and can play on either wing, whether taking defenders on or cutting inside onto his other foot.”
Cristian Rodriguez started his career at Penarol and went on to play 40 league games for the Uruguayan club before moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
Following a somewhat disappointing spell at Parc des Princes, the winger joined Porto in June 2008 and quickly became a key member of the first team set up at Dragao.
However, the Uruguayan has seen little playing time over the last couple of years and decided to leave the club in search of first team football.
