Atletico Madrid are ready to abandon their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani and turn to Alexandre Lacazette of Arsenal instead, according to Sky Sports.
Cavani’s move from the French to the Spanish capital seemed practically done, given that the 32-year-old had reportedly agreed personal terms with Atletico. But as his contract does not actually expire before the summer, a fee was still to be agreed between the two clubs, and according to PSG sporting director Leonardo, the Ligue 1 champions have turned down La Liga side’s offer.
PSG apparently do not want to part ways with Cavani this month despite that meaning they would lose his services for free in the summer, as they fight on multiple fronts and see Atletico a potential obstacle on their way to Champions League glory. But the Rojiblancos need a striker now and cannot wait for the summer, and they’re therefore considering a swoop for Lacazette.
The 28-year-old Frenchman is an important part of Mikel Arteta’s team, but the Gunners currently look set to miss out on Champions League football for the fourth year in a row, and that could be a motive for him to look for another club.
