August 13th: Sunday’s European Double – 5/1 Special, Tips & Predictions

Watching many of Europe’s elite domestic leagues open up the 2023/24 campaigns this weekend, Sunday promises another stacked schedule from across the continent.

So, for those of you looking to stick on a Sunday flutter, we have found a pair of eye-catching affairs that can offer a great return for your weekend bet.

13:30 AZ Alkmaar vs Go Ahead Eagles

Once again gaining a string of plaudits last season as they secured an immediate top-four finish, AZ Alkmaar have certainly cemented their spot as a Dutch powerhouse over the past few years. Reaching the Europa Conference League semi-finals last season before falling to eventual winners West Ham, Sunday’s hosts should find the mood in their camp at a continued high.

Enjoying a hugely impressive summer run while on pre-season duties and picking up some perfect momentum, the Cheeseheads will be excited to open their Eredivisie campaign this weekend.

Only losing one of their final six top-flight battles last season, Pascal Jansen’s men also gained a real reputation for their continued success on home soil.

Including a 5-1 romp against Emmen back on May 14th, it should be noted that Alkmaar lost just a pair of their final 12 Eredivisie matchups at the AFAS Stadion – a run that stemmed all the way back to October 16th.

On the flip side, signing off the 2022/23 campaign with a routine 2-0 defeat at the hands of Heerenveen, the Go Ahead Eagles were left hugely disappointed after settling for another bottom-half finish among Holland’s elite last season.

Along with winning just a pair of their final 10 straight top-flight appearances, Sunday’s also showed a string of public issues on their travels.

Including a 3-0 drumming against Dutch giants Feyenoord, the Deventer-based outfit lost each of their last four straight contests away from the De Adelaarshorst by an aggregate score of 9-1.

Facing what looks set to be a huge challenge when they open the new Eredivisie campaign on Sunday afternoon, Rene Hake’s men should be bracing themselves for a stern examination here.

Failing to collect a single win at the AFAS Stadion since way back in 1995, we are expecting an enjoyable home victory this weekend.

20:30 Getafe vs Barcelona

Making real La Liga history last season as they got their hands on a first domestic crown since, Barcelona certainly gained a string of plaudits from across Spain’s elite. Dethroning bitter rivals Real Madrid thanks to a rampant 10-point buffer, Xavi’s side have made it clear that they have their sights set on enjoying another top-flight romp this time around.

While Xavi’s superstar squad might have failed to find much stability over the final few weeks back in May, Sunday’s hosts will be eager to make an early statement of intent this weekend.

Really impressing with their defensive performances last season and only shipping 20 La Liga strikes in their 38 appearances, the Catalonia giants have only continued to shine despite their public issues behind the scenes at the Nou Camp.

Likewise, with attacking talisman and ex-Bayern Munich record-breaking Robert Lewandowski grabbing a maiden Spanish Golden Boot after notching 21 goals last year, Xavi’s men will be eager to lay down an early marker here.

While Getafe might have found a crucial boost last season as they just about limped their way to La Liga safety, Sunday’s hosts endured what was a real top-flight struggle on either side of the World Cup’s winter break.

Winning just a trio of their final 12 La Liga appearances – a run that stemmed all the way back to May 19th – the Blues should also be worried by a luckless record against the reigning Spanish champions.

In fact, Jose Bordalas’ side have recorded only a single victory from their last 23 straight showdowns against Barcelona across all competitions.

With many around the Coliseum Alfonso Perez fearing that their side could be destined for another relegation scrap this time around, we are backing an away victory here.
