Former Liverpool defender Avi Cohen died on Tuesday, a week after sustaining severe head injuries from a motorbike accident in Tel Aviv.
Cohen, 54, was a former Israeli international and the first Israeli to play in England’s top flight.
He made 24 appearances for Liverpool and won a special place in the hearts of the Anfield faithful when he scored a goal against Aston Villa to help the Reds claim the First Division title in 1979-80.
He also played for Maccabi Tel Aviv and Scottish giants Rangers during his 15-year professional career.
Cohen is the father of Bolton Wanderers midfielder Tamir Cohen, who was given leave by the Premier League club to be at his bedside.
“To our great sadness, a health ministry committee was in the hospital today and confirmed that our father is indeed brain dead. Which is to say, he has died,” Tamir Cohen said.
