Dutch side AZ Alkmaar appear to be on their way back to the top. Louis van Gaal’s men crushed Sparta Rotterdam 6-0 on Friday night.
Sparta, which is in fact the team where Van Gaal spent most of his years as a player, never stood a chance in Alkmaar.
Less than a minute had been played when El Hamdaoui opened the score for the home side, and Moussa Dembele doubled the gap twenty minutes later.
Swerts and Dembele then went on to add the next two for a 4-0 half time result. El Hamdaoui netted his second in the 58th minute, and the sixth and final goal came from Moisander on the hour mark.
The victory allows AZ to move into second place, although the 2007 runners-up should drop a few spots as their rivals catch up over the weekend.
