Bad break for Schalke´s Draxler

Schalke’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Montpellier has been soured with the news Julian Draxler will be out for some time with an arm injury.

The 19-year-old midfielder equalised for the hosts at the Veltins Arena on Wednesday before winning the penalty that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar tucked away to make it 2-1.

However, Draxler was taken off on a stretcher with an arm injury after the incident leading to the spot-kick, and was taken to hospital immediately after the match to undergo further examination.

It was then confirmed he had fractured his arm, and has already successfully gone under the knife. It is not yet known exactly how long the German international will be sidelined, but he will be unavailable for several weeks.

Meanwhile, defender Benedikt Howedes voiced his dismay with the Schalke fans’ critical attitude in the closing stages of the game.

The Schalke faithful whistled goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall when he took his time to resume play while the Bundesiga side were 2-1 up, and the club captain feels the ‘keeper had every right to take things slowly.

“It’s not fair toward the goalkeeper that his own fans whistle him when he decides to take his time in order to protect the lead. And it’s unfair toward the team as well,” Howedes said.

Schalke will be looking to return to winning ways on Saturday when they host Wolfsburg.
